Local Events: Carbon Coop at Cafe Scientifique

Café Scientifique is a place where people can meet to hear eminent speakers on all things scientific. The events are extremely popular with lively discussion and informative talks. Topics are always relevant, cutting edge and up-to-date. They are often taken from a wider global discussion.

All are welcome. The Café is held at The New Headingley Club on St Michael’s Road.

On 11th December 3 members of the Carbon Coop will be presenting on the challenges facing the energy sector. The move to a low carbon energy system is one of the greatest science and engineering challenges we currently face. The intermittent nature of renewable power sources and the electrification of transportation and heating make grid balancing far more complicated than in the past and puts significant strain on our ageing energy infrastructure.

In order to meet this challenge, providing energy security and tackling climate change, we need to drastically rethink not only power generation but also distribution and consumption. As consumers the crucial question is not how much energy we use, but how and when we use it. This presentation will include: A brief introduction to our current energy system and its challenges; The role of smart grids, batteries and electric vehicles; Demand Response: Not just energy reduction but energy shifting; Early adopters and conscious consumers – aggregating our demands for a low carbon future.
